A quick sketch of the top 5 law firms websites in Connecticut… and the cracks in their strategies. Here we go:
Trantolo’s website has a page authority of 45 out 100. (100 is the strongest) Out of all of the 1000s of websites I’ve analyzed, the highest law firm authority rating was around 51 (and this was pretty odd). Most law firm website authority ratings are in the 30s.
The Trantolo website has 16,098 backlinks, which is very high, but all of their backlinks all coming from only 123 referring domains. Hmmm. This is VERY low for this many backlinks, so I looked deeper to see what’s going on and found:
Their profile shows 12,382 links coming from http://www.dreamride.org which looks like a pet donation website. Why would Dream Ride link to a PI law firm 12,000+ times? They wouldn’t naturally…
It’s unnatural link building, yet this site is ranked number 1 for a very valuable phrase. This is VERY good information! It means another law firm with a strong linking campaign can come along and knock them out of the box.
Trantolo also own this website, http://bikelawyer.com/ and they link to their main site 945 times from it. It’s a pretty nice site with a page authority of 34. Here’s a quote from the site:
“At Trantolo & Trantolo we also work long hours pouring over case books, doctors’ notes and arguing with insurance companies about the value of damaged property and damaged lives. We don’t stop until we get the settlement you deserve.”
Nice site, great menus, clean onsite SEO, well structured link funnels…nice work.
They have 963 backlinks coming from 156 referring domains and a trust flow of 22 out of 100. (Trust flow is a metric used to determine how relevant and valid their backlinks are.)
Trust flow of 22 is low, so I looked closely to learn why and I found that 106 out of their 963 links are coming from http://dijulius.com/, which is a PA1 (weak!) and totally unrelated to law. This is hurting them.
The most relevant set of links are coming from this lawyer article directory: http://lawyerscope.com/ – the links are relevant, but they’re coming from the weaker internal pages rather than the homepage where all the strength comes from.
Little info to help you understand this analysis:
A “backlink” is when another website links to yours. Every link counts as a vote in the eyes of Google, so sites with a healthy backlink profile dominate their market online.
Note: not all backinks are equal. Backlinks need to be relevant and authoritative. A website with 10 great backlinks can outrank a website with 500 average backlinks.
I chose Connecticut personal injury sites for my analysis, but a backlink analysis is the same for criminal law, family law…any law specialty.
Websites with clean SEO and quality backlinks win online, always.
With a page authority of 41 and 4,003 backlinks coming from 80 referring domains, this site lands in the 5th spot for the phrase “personal injury lawyer CT”.
Right from the start I can see they’re really shooting for motorcycle accident cases. They have 1,969 links coming from http://www.ride-ct.com/ (which they might own) and 1,187 links coming from http://massmotorcycle.org/
At this first glance, their backlinks look natural to me, so they’re in a nice position to climb in rank quickly.
My recommendation for them would be to get more backlinks from homepages of law related sites and leave these motorcycle sites alone for a while. They rank #1 for “Connecticut motorcycle accident lawyers”, but they’re nowhere to be found for “Connecticut defective products lawyers”.
Hmmm. Nice clean site with the usual pages: car/construction/industrial/med mal/ etc.
Domain authority of only 25. There’s only 145 backlinks coming from 36 referring domains.
Why is this site in the number 7 spot? A few reasons:
1. their backlinks are very natural and 90% relevant.
2. their anchor text ratios are perfect (under 4% for most phrases)
3. their onsite SEO is clean and not over-optimized.
They would climb quickly if they created a few SILOs on this site by adding more content to support their main keywords.
Domain authority of 29.
92 backlinks coming from 41 referring domains.
As you can see there’s a direct correlation between the number of backlinks/referring domains and Google rank.
It’s not really a pure numbers game, but generally, more backlinks are better if they’re relevant and your anchor text ratios are below 4%. Get these things in order and you’ll reap the benefits.
