Here’s a quick sketch of the top Chicago law firm websites – according to page rnak and backlinks – and cracks in their strategies. Here we go:
Page Authority is 47 (out of 100 – 100 is the highest)
This is a pretty strong website with a decent number of pages, an active blog, and 7,500+ backlinks coming from 136 referring domains.
136 is a low number of referring domains for this many backlinks, so I dug a little deeper to find that they own a few exact match domain blogs: http://www.chicagocaraccidentlawyerblog.com/ and http://www.illinoisinjurylawyerblog.com/ and that’s where many of their backlinks are coming from. It’s a good strategy, because Google loves original content, but there’s a more effective approach.
Getting backlinks from the homepages of a few high PageRank relevant sites will always beat getting thousands of backlinks from your own blogs.
(this is actually in the number 3 spot, but I’m not including directories in my analysis)

How are they ranked so well with such a small number of links? I believe it’s because their backlink profile is very natural looking…very diverse. It could be that the competition is not as fierce as I expected and one could rank in the top 10 with a pretty small number of relevant links. It’s possible.
I searched “chicago car accident lawyer” to see if they were on the first page for this phrase, and they weren’t. Levinperconti.com was is the #1 spot for this phrase too.
3,954 backlinks from 247 referring domains.
I’m not impressed with their backlink profile, because it’s mostly weak directories like http://lawyerworld.com/, questionable lawyer link sites like http://www.justlawlinks.com/, and irrelevant sites like http://www.marianosanfilippo.com/.
Why are they on the first page? It could be that they have a decent anchor text ratio. Their exact match anchors are at 5%. (3% would be even better). This website is not hard to outrank. You just need to get your onsite coding and link funnels nice and clean, then work on your backlink profile.

A “backlink” is when another website links to yours. Every link counts as a vote in the eyes of Google, and sites with a healthy backlink profile will dominate online.
Note: not all backinks are equal. Backlinks need to be relevant and authoritative. If all on-page factors were equal and the same, a website with 10 great backlinks can outrank a website with 500 average backlinks.
I chose Chicago personal injury sites for my analysis, but it works for criminal law, family law…any law specialty. Websites with clean SEO and quality backlinks win online, always.
They have 364 backlinks coming from 91 referring domains – most of their backlinks are coming from weak internal pages of free random industry directories like http://thedirectorylistings.org/ and http://freelinksdirectory.net/. Not a very healthy diet of backlinks at all. I like seeing this, because it means I can push my clients into the top positions quickly.
You can find a list of free and paid relevant law firm directories on my site. Having a listing in about 100 of these free directories will give you a little boost in rank.
This is actually a pretty strong site, but there’s something strange going on because the search results show an internal page instead of their homepage, which is also optimized for “Chicago personal injury lawyer”. I really don’t know why Google is showing their internal page.
On an even stranger note, they have 1,199 links coming from this baseball website: http://boomersbaseball.com/ and 300+ from this website: http://schaumburgboomers.com/ – totally irrelevant.
They do however have some pricey links coming from PRweb and a few paid listing directories. They would be much higher in rank if they re-vamped their onsite SEO a did a better job at funneling incoming links.
